Drink of Curiosity

Hi!

As part of the ongoing efforts to stop thinking about our impending demise I am planning to write about incidents that happened when I was a child.. (Sigh that was so long ago)

Well here's one of them -

My uncle used to stay with us, and being free of worldly obligations at the time, traveled a lot with his friends. He usually was kind enough to bring me small trinkets or yummy snacks from wherever it was that he went. Needless to say, younger-me used to look forward to my stash whenever he was due to return.

He had gone to Kerala on one such trip. On the morning that he returned, I was excited - this was Kerala, God's own country with it's lush forests! I was thinking of coconuts, banana chips and jackfruits with dreamy eyes.
When he was done parking, I excitedly greeted him and looked around - there didn't seem to be any package he was holding at all. A little disappointed I figured - Hey! he might have left my goodies in the car! (yes greedy I was, move on we shall)

All this time I never bothered to listen to him telling my mom that they were in a hurry, and couldn't do much. I went to the car determined to at least see what had he brought. I looked on the dashboard, under the seats, and even checked the rear multiple times. After the third time I gave up. I was hurt and disappointed. This was turning out to be the worst day in the week. It was a school week, I had sports class, puppies near my house had moved away, and now this?! In my huffy anger I sat in the car and my eyes fell to a bottle of Mountain Dew.

Now, my parents usually trust only Coca-Cola. Maybe Sprite or Limca, but never any of the fancy nonsense like Miranda, Fanta or Pepsi. Needless to say I never knew what Mountain Dew actually looked like. Sure I had seen some advertisements, where there was a lime green- almost radioactive liquid shown. Please keep in mind this important point as you read further.

So there I was, with about half a bottle of Mountain Dew. It looked new enough. There was a lime green, almost radioactive liquid in it. I was feeling let-down. I decided I will drink this new drink. "That will show them!" I thought to myself vindictively, "Never letting me drink what I want, and not bringing me things"  (and yessss greedy I was, move on we shall). I opened it and drank deep.

It was sweet, I will give you that. It had a chemical aftertaste, which was alright, because in my mind all aerated drinks had a weird chemical flavour. It however didn't have bubbles. My bright self thought this was because all the bubbles had escaped due to the constant movement of the car. I went in to share this discovery with my mom. I wanted my folks to have a taste of Mountain Dew as well! (I didn't mind sharing things given to me)

So I went proudly and showed my mom the bottle. My mom was making breakfast, and told me not to drink cool drinks this early. My dad agreed with her before going back to his paper. And then my uncle told them - "That's car coolant" I froze. "What?" I asked. "Yeah, that's car coolant. You didn't drink it did you?" Of Course I Drank It Uncle, Are You Insane?? I am pretty sure he saw the decreased quantity of the said coolant. Or maybe he didn't, it's hard to say. Anyway, I went quiet, thinking about what I had just done. I went about with my day, quietly getting ready for school. I felt like this was my last day on earth. I could drop dead any moment, and then what would my parents do? So when I saw my uncle had left the vicinity, I quietly went up to my mother and told her that I had, regrettably, drunk the coolant after all.

Of course instead of showing any concern, my dear mother immediately shared the story with my dad and they both spent the next week laughing whenever they saw me. My dad gave me a short lecture on how I shouldn't presume everything was food, and resumed laughing. They did ask me to drink lots of water. "Flush out the coolant" my mom said and burst into giggles.

Needless to say, I trust sealed bottles that I am sure of now. And I never drank any of the weirder drinks for a long time after that.

TLDR?
I mistook coolant for Mountain Dew and drank it up like there was no tomorrow. Parents laughed. The end

Until next time!

You seem to have a penchant for drinking curious things. Remember a couple of years ago when you were about to sip on coconut oil and yours truly stopped you just in time? :P
