Ghosts in (Hollywood) Movies

I had the misfortune of watching Insidious Chapter III (3) today. (on a borrowed Amazon Prime Account no less). And watching it made me rethink all the countless horror movies I have watched in my life. Some of them were truly scary, while some of them were laughable.

The things they all seemed to have in common were :

  1. It is usually dark when spooky things happen. The ghost seemed to hate the sun. Or maybe it knew that growling in broad daylight wouldn't have as scary an effect as it wanted to. \
  2. People sure do have super big houses. Dark and big houses that you wouldn't want to live in. I mean have you guys ever noticed that every horror movie ever has to have this super scary house, with a basement or attic or dark garden? The whole house looks gloomy all the damn time. What's with the red lighting people?! I would probably stub my toe a million times and maybe even die by bashing my head into the wall or something if it's that dimly lit all the time. Kinda makes me think that tubelights are those inventions that only uncool people like me use. If you really wanted to live you would use dim yellow or red lighting.
  3. I will not dwell on the fact that people leave their infants to sleep in another room, even though they know something is amiss. And some people (Ahem) think that I am apathetic to the plight of children.
  4. Very few people seem to populate the dark, scary houses and neighbors even in an apartment complex never seem to notice there's something spooky going on.
  5. The ghost/demon/supernatural entity loves scaring people. And I guess I understand why (?) Imagine you are a person who has died and has been lonely for so many years. You see gullible people entering your kingdom. What do you do? You wouldn't say hello - they wouldn't hear you. No, you would scare them, and laugh about it with your mates at Hell's Tavern - "An' then she went AAAAAAAEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! You had ter be there Jim, Paul fell off the stairs laughing. I could take you there 'morrow, you'd see the wimps for yerself!"
  6. If there is a psychic in the movie, one standard dialogue would be - "This entity is really dangerous". Thanks Eloise, Elain or whatever -  we know.
  7. This ghost/demon/supernatural entity is really strong and stuff, and lives on a whole other dimension/world but wants to come to the Earth and will prefer doing so by becoming a weak human. Because it wants to live here. And probably murder the Earth? It will basically give up immortality and immense power just to become human.

Well, I am off to read some good ol' ghost stories. Until the next weekend -
PS: I mentioned Hollywood because I have fortunately never had the pleasure of watching regional horror movies. :p

This is Awesome :D :D. BTW, Are zombies nocturnal? I think Resident Evil movies and Shaun of the Dead showed zombies attacking during the day. Apart from that pesky detail, I agree with everything you mentioned! Also you forgot to mention the dumb girl character that is the first to get killed by doing dumb things!

I haven't watched a lot of zombie movies. Somehow they have never seemed watch-worthy to me. I did like the Resident Evil movies though. They almost seem vampiric though. Ah the dumb girl character! Perhaps another article dedicated to this person ?
